COILED BASKETRY
with Betty Atwood
(10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - with a lunch break for exploring the Festival)
Learn how to combine wool yarn and twine to create beautiful baskets or plaques in a technique that goes back to pre-historic times. You will learn basic ways to start coiled baskets and how to create different shapes and patterns. Demonstrations will also include coiling without foundation, a technique that requires only yarns and a needle to produce beautiful bags of all sizes.
Some basic materials will be provided, but students should bring knitting or rug yarns of their color choices. Needles will be provided as well as handouts with diagrams and bibliography.
SPINNING THE SOUTH AMERICAN CAMELIDS

(10:00 AM to 1:00 PM)
In this workshop you will have an opportunity to work with both llama and alpaca fiber. Discussions will include the animals and their history, llamas and alpacas in Vermont and a detailed examination of camelid fiber. You will have a chance to card, comb, de-hair and spin these luxurious and exotic fibers.
Fiber and some tools will be provided. Students should bring a spinning wheel or drop spindle and, if available, hand carders.
NATURAL DYEING
with Jane Woodhouse
(10:00 AM to 1:00 PM)
This workshop will focus on general dye theory as applied to natural dyes, specifically, using extracts. Demonstrations will include safe mordanting procedures, mixing dye solutions for the extracts and reproducing colors accurately. A portion of the discussion will address uses of the various extracts in mixing and overdyeing to obtain a range of colors. The class will also look at special effects with natural dyes, focusing on techniques to create unique color effects on yarns, fibers and fabrics, and will include painted yarns and fibers, ikat warps, space-dyed yarns, shibori and hand-dyed buttons. Participants will receive comprehensive dye notebooks with workshop instructions as well as notes for working on their own to dye yarns. Notebooks will include a set of dye samples on a variety of yarns.
THE COST FOR EACH WORKSHOP IS $30.
