The Vermont Sheep and Wool Festival is pleased to announce Beth Brown-Reinsel will be joining us to teach 3 days of workshops at the 2010 festival in Tunbridge, Vermont.
 Beth Brown-Reinsel has been involved in many facets of the fiber arts as a spinner, basket weaver, dyer, knitter, former yarn shop owner, author, and knitwear designer, but teaching is her passion. She has worked in production as well as in creating and teaching courses and workshops both locally and nationally. She developed and implemented the correspondence course Traditional Ganseys for The Knitting Guild of America for 11 years, as well as owning Knitting Traditions, a mail order business of imported traditional yarns, for seven years. Beth has authored the book Knitting Ganseys , published by Interweave Press. Her articles and designs have been featured in magazines such as Knitters, Interweave Knits, Vogue Knitting, Threads, Cast-On and Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot.
We are offering discounts for early registration. Vendors will be given registration preference for the Friday workshop.

Aran Pullovers from the Top Down

Level: Intermediate, experience with dp needles strongly suggested.
In this one day course, a small Aran pullover will be knitted from the neckband down. Techniques to be covered include: tubular ribbing, shifting the neckline forward for a more comfortable fit (using short rows and wrapping and turning), creating a saddle shoulder, picking up for sleeves, and sewing nice looking seams. Traditional Aran patterns will be knitted in the little garment: traveling cables across a purl background, undulating baby cables, moss stitch, cabled ribbing, twisted stitches, and an optional bobble study (knit 13 different kinds, if you like)!

Level: All. Be able to knit in the Continental style
The Norwegian Purl, a variation of the conventional Continental purl, is noted for its superior tension control, and ease of execution. The yarn always stays behind the work, making ribbing a breeze and two-color textured knitting a pleasure. A swatch will be knitted in class to practice this technique and its applications: Ribbing on the right side and ribbing on the wrong side, the Scandinavian method of working with two yarns in the left hand (knitting, purling, and weaving) on the right side and the wrong side of the work.

Level: Intermediate (must be proficient with dp needles)
Using wristers as a template, some of the beautiful knitting methods of Latvia will be studied in this class. Knit one of a pair of wristers to learn the following techniques which can be applied to mitten cuffs, sock tops or sleeves: a scalloped cuff, the herringbone braid and many subtle and beautiful variations of the half-braid. A choice of traditional motifs is incorporated in the main part of the wrister, as well as a picot edge at the end. Additional techniques to be discussed include knitting with two yarns in the right hand, two yarns in the left hand, or a yarn in each hand, as well as knitting with three colors and setting up the knitting for color changes in the braids.

Plenty of time will be given to establish the essential coordination skills and basic techniques every spinner must master to gain competence in spinning. You will venture into areas of fiber preparation, tools of the trade, terminology, drafting and plying techniques (time permitting). Overviews of wheel mechanics, maintenance and spinning history will be scattered throughout the workshop. By the end of the day you will be putting yarn onto the bobbin, admiring your first skein of yarn and leaving with the confidence to continue spinning on your own! No experience is required, nor do you need to own sheep! We will supply the fiber and even the wheel if you do not own one. For those bringing a wheel please be sure it is in excellent working condition. Should you have questions about the condition of your wheel please call Patty at 802-254-9792 before the class.

Curious about an ancient form of spinning? Interested in making your own yarn but don't have space for a wheel? Getting tangled up trying to learn on your own? Spend some quality time with a drop spindle, and you may never want to put it down. Class time will be devoted to the basics of spinning but may also include a demonstration of Andean plying and discussions on choosing a spindle and caring for dropspun yarns.
If you already have a drop spindle, please bring it! If you do not, spindles from the instructor's personal collection will be available for use during class.

Sunday October 3rd, 2010

Level: Intermediate. Must be comfortable with double pointed needles or working with two circulars. Ability to knit English style is strongly suggested.
Students will learn the Swedish technique of tvåänstickning, or twined knitting, by knitting a small sock, using worsted weight yarn. Twined knitting is worked with two yarns of the same color, twined around each other, and creates a warmer, denser fabric than conventional stranded knitting. The sock is worked circularly on double pointed needles and includes many techniques: three twined knitting cast-ons, reading and working from a chart, the "O" stitch, Chain Path, a traditional motif for the leg, shaping the toe, and working an unusual method for an afterthought heel.

Easy Tapestry Weaving – Learn the centuries old art of creating pictures with yarn in a simple and easy way. This workshop will introduce you to basic tapestry weaving techniques--focusing on design, building shapes, and methods to join colors. Students will create a tapestry on a frame loom to bring home. Nuno Felt Scarf Workshop

Nuno felting is the process of combining sheer woven material such as silk with natural fibers using wet felting techniques to produce a lightweight, drapable yet warm fabric. This workshop will focus on introductory techniques, covering types of fabrics, appropriate fibers, design elements, and the basic wet felting process to produce a scarf, using luxurious wool and angora blend rovings or batts.

Patty Blomgren
has been a spinner, weaver and fiber artist for over 25 years. She has taught spinning and weaving at Ewe and Me in Northfield, Massachusetts and currently teaches at Margie's Muse, Jamaica, Vermont, Maybelle Farm in Wardsboro, Vermont and is in her 13th year teaching spinning at The Putney School, Putney, Vermont as well as numerous spinning classes in the Southern Vermont area. Patty also is a spinning/fleece contest judge for the annual Vermont Sheep and Wool Festival.
For the past 5 years Patty was the master spinner at the Green Mountain Spinnery in Putney, Vermont where her knowledge of handspinning translated to operating the Spinnery's 1948 ring spinning frame. Patty graduated in 2001 from Mount Holyoke College with a major in Women's Studies and a minor in Art. Her final project in Women's Studies brought her back to her passions of the fiber arts when she was curate for a weaving exhibit at Artspace Community Art Center in Greenfield, Massachusetts.
Teaching people to spin is Patty's favorite obsession!
Laura Buermann
has been working with sheep and fiber at Paradise Bay Farm for most of her life. When she was 14 she picked up a drop spindle and never looked back. She currently lives, works, and spins in Burlington, Vermont.
Eileen Easterly
Eileen has a love of weaving and fiber arts. Her goal is to make the fiber arts fun and accessible to everyone. She has a master’s degree in education and 15 years experience teaching hands-on classes. Eileen works with her husband, Mike, in their fiber arts-tools business, Millpoint Emporium. Her home is in Amsterdam, NY.
Chris Murray Morgan
is a fiber artist in central Connecticut who spins yarn, knits and makes fine felt products using a wet felting process. She specializes in soft luxury fiber blends, using angora from her own pet angora rabbits in most of her fiber blends. Chris teaches spinning, felted scarf and mitten techniques, and angora rabbit grooming and care. She can be reached at woolybuns@german-angoras.com.
